Naming
Current practice in Belgium, where several parts of the territory are shared between several operators, is to name bus, tram or metro routes as such:
<operator> <route number> <from> - <to>.
No mention of the type of vehicle here, because this is already set as route=* or route_master=*. This applies to De Lijn, STIB/MIVB and TEC.
Bus lines
Tagging
Please read Buses first.
Create a type=route_master relation containing (at least) two separate type=route relations to describe the line, one for each direction the route follows and other variations.
All the stops are grouped before the ways in the order the bus/tram passes them. They get a role 'platform'.
Example:
- Master relation line 555 Brussels-Antwerp
- First relation, the route from Brussels to Antwerp (bus 555 to ANTWERP) ref= 555
- Second relation, the route from Antwerp to Brussels (bus 555 to BRUSSELS) ref = 555

Night buses
In Antwerp and Brussels, the line numbers of night service buses start with "N". In Antwerp the numbers themselves often refer to daytime tram and bus lines, that follow more or less the same route. In Brussels numbers do not match daytime lines.
"On_demand buses" (belbussen)
These buses are very different from normal bus lines. It can be seen as something between a normal bus line and a taxi. Call buses can be found in thin populated areas. If you want to use this service you need to call a special phone number and make a reservation (at least 2 hours in advance). These phone numbers are not reachable on Sundays, so if you want to use the service then, you have to make your reservations one day before.
Call buses do not follow routes. Instead, they have a number of bus stops in a specific area (they only stop at these bus stops). The (mini)bus will then follow on optimized itinerary to pick up and drop off its passengers.
See here for the explanation in Dutch.

Since the stops are ordered in the relation, it is obvious which is the first and which is the terminus.
