Greece/Motorways

Government Gazette ΦΕΚ 253/ΑΑΠ/21.12.2015 is the legislative backbone for a the numbering system of a majority of motorways in Greece. However, there are some exceptions (as of March 2021), because of the current state of the road signs:

  • The Α1 is not a motorway between Chalastra to Polykastro, because there is no central reservation.
  • The Α24 is only a motorway between the Α2 and Papageorgiou interchange: everything south of the latter is an expressway.[1]
  • The Α242 is also not a motorway.[2]
  • The Α65 Egaleo Ring Road:
    • The section north of Aspropyrgos Avenue is not downgraded, because the motorway signage still exists.[3]
    • The section south of Aspropyrgos Avenue is not a motorway, because the connection with the ΕΟ8 at Skaramagas was never built.
  • The Α64, Α642 and Α62 have not been renumbered to Α62, Α621 and Α64 respectively, because all known signage still uses the old numbers: in the meantime, the new numbers will use the proposed:ref=* key.

Tempting it may be to counter those exceptions, but OpenStreetMap is not a crystal ball.
