Gender access and gender segregation. Currently, the keys female=yes, male=yes/no and unisex=yes are more common.

Note: A proposal is underway to resolve overlaps and conflicts between these tags.

Common values

Caution: Some of these tags might change meaning or become deprecated in case the currently discussed Gender proposal gets accepted.

  • gender=female – for women
  • gender=male – for men
  • gender=both – for both sexes
  • gender=unisex – any gender without segregation. For example, unisex toilet(s).

When not to use

Gender of the feature itself

In some rare cases, mappers may be tempted to tag the gender of the feature itself, for example in cases of statues or sculptures of people (example) or deities (example). However, gender=* is used for access restriction by gender of the visitors.

No tag for the gender of the feature itself has been approved. Solutions like statue:gender=* or, more generically feature:gender=* could be conceived. However, it is suggested to discuss this with the community first in case you need it.
