proposed=*

Status: in use

The key state=* is in use on route relations to document the current operational state of the route.

An alternative to state=proposed is to use the prefix proposed:*=*, that is, proposed:route=* - this makes it clearer to database users that this route is not yet in existence.

The most common values currently in use are:

  • state=proposed: route proposed but not yet signposted/in operation
  • state=connection: a connecting route but not part of the core route
  • state=alternate: an alternate route but not part of the core route

Routers and renderers may behave differently depending on this value. For example, OpenCycleMap and CyclOSM show proposed routes whereas cycle.travel and WaymarkedTrails do not.
