Key:wifi

wifi
Description
Indicates if an object offers WiFi internet access.
Group: Properties
Used on these elements
Status: in use

This tag is for indication that a map entity such as a building, a shop, restaurant, etc. offers WiFi internet access to the public, either as a paid service or even for free.

As an example, restaurant offering internet access may be tagged primarily as amenity=restaurant and additionally wifi=yes.

wifi=free may be used to indicate that Internet access is free.

Note that there is more popular internet_access=* that went through voting process.

wifi=* is probably still used by many people because

  • key value is easier to remember
  • key value is likely to be invented on spot by somebody wishing to tag this information who is unaware about internet_access=*
  • to explictly tag place as location where wifi is available in addition to internet_access=yes. Place that allows internet access using different methods (for example library that has both computers with internet access and wifi) may be tagged as either internet_access=wifi;terminal or internet_access=yes. colon separated value is unlikely to be handled by data consumers and was not specified in Proposed features/Internet access, second solution is not allowing to specify what kind of access is available. Adding also wifi=yes/wifi=free partially solves this problem.
