Status: de facto

building=mosque is used for a building designed and constructed for the five daily prayers of Islam.

This tag does not indicate how the building is currently used.

How to map

Ideally, draw an area around the building outline. If that is not possible, use a node instead. Tag the area or node with building=mosque.

In almost all cases you should also add the tags amenity=place_of_worship + religion=muslim to indicate that the building is used as a mosque (or can be so used). If the mosque is abandoned or now used for another purpose, do not add this tag.

The larger site where the mosque sits (including ablution areas, staff residences, madrasa buildings, etc) can be tagged landuse=religious + religion=muslim.

Mistakes to avoid

Construction versus use

building=* indicates the original construction and purpose of a building, not current use. In Europe (and probably other parts of the world) many mosques are converted from houses, commercial buildings, or churches. In these cases the building=* tag should show the nature of the building. building=church + amenity=place_of_worship + religion=muslim is not nonsense!

Other religious buildings

Some buildings that may look like mosques superficially are in fact madrasas (or other amenities). These could be tagged building=madrasa (or as appropriate).

Rendering

OSM Carto renders building=mosque as an ordinary building. Rendering as a mosque (displayed below) is only triggered by amenity=place_of_worship and religion=muslim.
