The tag amenity=clinic is most commonly used to map a clinic, i.e. an outpatient medical facility with 10 or more of doctors, nurses and associated staff. Clinics offer outpatient care, diagnosis, radiology, treatment, and sometimes urgent care. Admission of inpatients is not provided. Some mappers and editors also add this tag healthcare=clinic in addition.

Some mappers add this tag to any "clinic" which is an institution where a specific, specialised branch of medicine is practised (i.e. a clinic that practises only orthopædics). However, this would only be considered correct if it falls under the above criteria. Otherwise, see amenity=doctors.

How to map

Set a node at the center of the feature or draw an area along its outline. Tag it with amenity=clinic, healthcare=clinic and name=*.

When tagging, you may wish to consider using amenity=doctors instead if the practice is small, with perhaps only 1 to 10 staff.

Also consider amenity=hospital if the facility is very large with hundreds of staff and offers all that a clinic offers, plus inpatient care.

Tag history

This tag was introduced as part of a healthcare proposal[1] and intentionally duplicates amenity=clinic. It is used by some with intention of replacing and deprecating amenity=clinic in the future. The plan is to

  1. Add healthcare=clinic to existing amenity=clinic objects
  2. Add support in at least prominent data consumers for also healthcare=clinic in addition to supporting amenity=clinic
  3. Remove support for amenity=clinic in data consumers and remove this tag from clinics

There is opposition to this potential deprecation of widely used tag amenity=clinic, but it also has some notable support.

Attempt to deprecate amenity=clinic was done in 2022 using proposal process.
