A playground map is a map painted on a paved surface to teach geography to children. The depicted map is usually a colorful political map emphasizing borders. Maps depicting subnational boundaries are common in countries in which memorizing a large set of states or provinces is an important part of the geography curriculum. A playground map is often part of a leisure=schoolyard on the grounds of a primary or elementary school, so that children can play on it during recess, but it can also appear elsewhere, such as at a playground in a park.

How to map a map

Draw a node or area and tag it playground=map. The shape of the area depends on the depicted map and how detailed you want to make the schoolyard.

subject=* and subject:wikidata=* are often used to indicate the extent of the map, such as the country depicted. For example, here are the maps most commonly depicted on playgrounds in the United States:

Use surface=* to indicate whether the map is on an asphalt, concrete, or rubberized surface.
