A schoolyard is an outdoor area within a school campus where the pupils can spend their breaks between lessons ("recess", in American English). While in English also described as the "school playground", it typically is a paved area for walking around. This tag's meaning is more specific than the English term "schoolyard" (which can refer to an open field) and often describes what is called a "blacktop" in American English.

Please note that the entire school campus is tagged as amenity=school, comprising the school building (building=school), the leisure=schoolyard, sports facilities (leisure=pitch, leisure=track, leisure=sports_hall), sometimes dedicated play areas e.g. with sandpit and climbing frame (leisure=playground), and auxiliary areas such as amenity=parking.

How to map

Create an area for the schoolyard and add the tag leisure=schoolyard.

Access

The typical access rights depend on the country and the region, so it is best to tag access=private (for school members and pupils only) or access=yes (for other use outside of school hours) explicitly, when known.

Activity structures and markings

Besides dedicated playgrounds or sports pitches separate from the schoolyard (as indicated in the drawing above), some schoolyards may have painted markings or installations on themselves for various recess activities.

These might be micromapped within the schoolyard area, and tagged with the particular activity, e.g.
