Zoo is a place that has confined animals on display for viewing by the public. In addition, a zoo may also include unusual specimens of plants.
How to Map
Create an area and tag it tourism=zoo.
If you are not sure of its border you can place a single node in the middle and tag it tourism=zoo but the area is preferable.
If given object has its own name then name=* is useful.
Type of Zoo
Typical zoo is not of a single type and includes different sections. One may map this areas and tags it with tags below
- zoo=petting_zoo - Small zoo or garden for kids to touch and play with animals
- zoo=enclosure - An enclosure
- zoo=wildlife_park - A park where indigenous animals live.
- zoo=safari_park - A safari parks, if you can drive through the park with your own car or bus.
- zoo=birds - A bird park
- zoo=falconry - A place where birds of prey are kept and demonstrated.
- zoo=aviary - An aviary for birds
- zoo=butterfly - A butterfly park
- zoo=reptile - often indoors, for snakes and other reptiles
In unlikely cases where entire zoo is of a single type one may use zoo=* on the same object as tourism=zoo.
But note that an aquarium is not tagged as a type of zoo, instead use: tourism=aquarium
Information about Zoo
Consider adding the following tags
- fee=*
- opening_hours=*
- wikipedia=*
- website=*
- All kinds of address information addr:*
Architecture
Zoos are mostly confined, therefore you might want to add extra ways for:
Mind the nodes with the type of entrances/exits:
and specify them with names where given (e.g. name=North Entrance).
Amenities in the Zoo
These are tagged either as isolated nodes or together with the building polygons.
General
Specificly Zoo
Animal
These are the main attractions, therefore you might add each attraction as a node with the proposed tagging:
- attraction=animal
- description=*, for example description=monkey
Likewise the natural=tree-tagging, you could specify:
- species=Loxodonta Africana
or connect it to a corresponding wikipedia=* page.
Buildings
When adding the buildings, please do not name the building after the anmials inside, but tag these with an extra node.
Of course if the building is really named, it should be tagged so, e.g. name=Elephant House.
How to Structure
Please do not structure the zoo via multiple polygons containing e.g. leisure=park or attraction=zoo, just to make them visible in major maps.
You can do this better (because more compliant) with:
- natural=bare_rock
- natural=grassland
- natural=mud
- natural=sand
- natural=scrub
- natural=wood
- natural=wetland
- natural=water
(as these structures are displayed in OSM Carto, too)
and mark these areas with barrier=fence, barrier=hedge, barrier=wall, barrier=retaining_wall.
More Structural Elements
Of course, leisure=park can be part of a zoo. These are areas with lawn or flowers,
and very often you find leisure=playground for younger visitors.
Trees might be added (as a node) natural=tree, or (as a way) natural=tree_row, or (as an area) landuse=forest.
You may add other natural elements such as water (for basins, ponds or lakes), beaches, as well as linear cliffs or waterways (and areas for their riverbanks). Some large zoos include their own local agricultural production for feeding their animals, which may be tagged as farmland (these subareas are generally not open to visitors and are enclosed with ditches, barriers and gates).
